Ozone Therapy Offers New Hope for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

The terms chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) and myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) describe a complex physical illness characterized by debilitating fatigue, post-exertional malaise, pain, cognitive problems, sleep dysfunction and an array of other immune, neurological and autonomic symptoms.

Could this be you?

Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) isn't just being tired. It's a new state of fatigue that has lasted for at least 6 months, and can be so severe that it gets in the way of your normal daily activities, at home and at work. Rest and sleep don't seem to help. If you have it, physical activity can leave you feeling worse, typically the next day.

What causes chronic fatigue syndrome?

The cause or causes of CFS are not well understood, but most cases follow viral infection. Contributing factors are thought to be environmental toxins, trauma, genetics and physical or emotional stress.

How is CFS diagnosed?

This is a disease which has no known biological marker, so diagnosis relies on the assessment of symptoms using diagnostic criteria such as NAMS.

What percentage of people have chronic fatigue syndrome?

Due to the difficulty of diagnosis and the fact that different criteria are followed in different places, there is no exact figure for the incidence of CFS in the community. Estimates range from 0.4% to 2.4% depending on which criteria are used, meaning up to 598,000 people in Australia and 120,000 in New Zealand may be affected by CFS over their lifetime.

Are women more likely to get chronic fatigue?

ME/CFS affects more women than men, in an approximate ratio of 4:1. In this respect, the disease is similar to other immuno-inflammatory conditions, such as lupus erythematosus systemic, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, Sjögren’s syndrome, etc, which are also more prevalent in women.

Is there a cure for chronic fatigue syndrome?

There is no universally accepted cure for CFS. The conventional approach is to treat the symptoms as they arise with pharmaceuticals such as anti-depressants, blood pressure regulating drugs and pain relief.

Is there a better way?

A holistic approach to medical issues not only considers the symptoms but looks at the underlying causes of the illness. CFS is usually associated with widespread infection throughout the body. Due to the well-documented ability of ozone therapy to modulate inflammatory illness, a research team in Italy decided to trial ozone therapy as a treatment for CFS, producing this fascinating paper

What were the results of the ozone therapy CFS trial?

“Of the 65 patients with CFS we have treated, 52 patients (80%) showed a significant improvement in symptomatology (>50% improvement in symptoms). There have been no side effects to ozone therapy.”

Is there a treatment for Long Covid?

With Covid-19 infections skyrocketing around the world, we are likely to see a huge increase in those unfortunate enough to suffer from symptoms 12 weeks or more after infection. This syndrome is generally known as Long Covid. According to national health statistics from the UK, at least 10% of those infected with Covid are in this category. That’s a lot of people!

More success with ozone

Thankfully, the research has already begun. Due to the success of ozone therapy both for CFS as already discussed and for treating acute covid such as in this study, a team of doctors conducted this randomised trial, treating 100 long Covid patients with autohemotherapy.

“Treatment with O2 -O3 -AHT improved fatigue symptoms in all the tested patients, though with different degrees. The highest effect was observed in about 36% of PASC patients but at least 85% of them experienced an improvement from FSS = 7 to FSS = 3.

How do I access ozone therapy?

The above study was done using a treatment known as autohemotherapy which requires a clinic with trained staff. However, recent research indicates that rectal insufflation (RI) has similar efficacy. Rectal Insufflation (RI) is now considered just as an effective protocol to treat a patient and fortunately can be self-administered quickly and easily at home with a home ozone therapy system such as the Wellness Warrior. RI has proven to give similar systemic benefits to autohemotherapy and is known to be a very low risk procedure.
